Three-Banded Plovers in Kruger National Park, South Africa

On our last morning in Kruger National Park, South Africa, we left the Lower Sabie Rest Camp and spent most of our time at the Biyamiti Dam before leaving the park through the Malelane Gate. We photographed three different groups of cooperative dwarf mongoose and a pair of cooperative wattled plover while driving to and away from the dam. At the dam, we photographed a giant kingfisher, a pied kingfisher, a hamerkop, and some three-banded plover.

My favorite image of the day is of an adult and chick three-banded plover taken at the Biyamiti Dam. They were out feeding just downstream of the dam in some shallow water, and every now and then one of the adults would call the chick over to hide it under its wing and out of sight of potential predators. In the image above, the little guy was just coming out from under the adult's wing.
