Tangle Falls in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

Another image from our trip to Alaska in 2009 … On our way back from Alaska, we stopped in Jasper National Park for a few days. Tangle Falls, at the southern end of the park, is a series of three main falls with some cascades in between. They are extremely easy to reach which makes them a popular subject, and that also makes them a bit difficult to photograph because the surrounding area has lots of social trails. One way to avoid the hand of man in the image is to focus on a small area. In the image above, I isolated small section of the waterfall that included a boulder at the base. I like the contrast of the solid rock and flowing water, and enough of the scene is captured to give an idea of the surrounding area. I used a polarizer to reduce the reflections off the wet rocks and a three-stop neutral density (ND) filter to lengthen the exposure in order to really blur the water.
