Bison Bull Demonstrating The Flehmen Response

Yesterday morning in Yellowstone National Park was good for bison photography. There was a thin layer of clouds which provided some nice, diffuse light, and one herd of bison was near the road where I could pull off and park. I always like to be near my vehicle when photographing bison because you never know when you might have to seek shelter. Because this particular herd of bison was so close, I stayed right by our vehicle and moved from one side to the other depending on which provided more protection. The bison were demonstrating lots of behavior associated with the rut, and the bull in this image is demonstrating the flehmen response — he's curling his upper lip to get a better sense of whether the female he's been following around is ready to mate.
