Cheetah Kill in Kruger National Park, South Africa

On our fourteenth, and final, full day in Kruger National Park, South Africa, we continued to explore the area around the Lower Sabie Rest Camp.

My favorite image of the day is of a cheetah turning over a young zebra carcass while its brother was still eating. We arrived at the kill in the morning while the cheetah were already eating, and fortunately they were in a fairly good location for photography. We photographed the two feeding for a while, and that's when the image above was taken. Then we waited while they rested in some nearby shade and then photographed some more when they came back to eat more. After they were finished, about a dozen vultures descended almost simultaneously followed by a steady stream of additional vultures. At one point, there were probably 20 vultures piled around the carcass and another dozen waiting on the ground and in nearby trees.
