Vervet Monkey in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

The third day of my safari in Tanzania, and our second full day in Ngorongoro Crater, was good too!

In the morning, we watched a spotted hyena chase down and finally kill a baby wildebeest. It happened too far away for us to photograph it, but it was very exciting to watch the long chase with the baby running right behind its mother as it wove among the other wildebeest before the hyena finally caught up and took it down.

We stopped at the Lerai forest picnic area shortly before lunch to photograph the vervet monkeys. I found one cooperative subject sitting in full shade and captured some nice portrait images (above).

Shortly after taking the image, an other vehicle pulled into the picnic area and boxed lunches were distributed to the passengers. Then one of the passengers got out of the vehicle to photograph the monkeys too. He put his boxed lunch down on the ground behind him, and as he was photographing the monkeys, two monkeys quickly ran over to the boxed lunch, opened it up, and took away about half of the contents before the photographer knew what was happening. :)

Vervets! I am going to show this to S. I asked her today what African animal she would most like me to photograph for her. She said, without any hesitation, "Monkeys!" Love this one. So nice to catch up on what you've been seeing. I can hardly wait to see you!
