The afternoon after Christmas Day looked promising for photography, so we hiked out to The Wings in the Bisti Wilderness. Along the way, I stopped to photograph another of my favorite subjects, what I call The Mushrooms. The Mushrooms are large hoodoos formed by a solid cap rock that's about 4 ft (1.2m) in diameter supported by softer sandstone. The patchy clouds formed a nice background as I got low to the ground to emphasize the size of The Mushrooms (above).

Conditions weren't very interesting by the time we reached The Wings because the cloud layer to the west was too thick. So, I was very happy that I had stopped to photograph The Mushrooms when they were looking good.
